Ask A Vet: Why Does My Dog Stare At Me When He Poops?

Have you ever noticed how when your dog is doing his business (number 2) and you are present, he will look at you? Is it because they are embarrassed? It would seem so and thats exactly what I always thought.

Turns out though, theres more to it. Since they are always aware of their immediate environment, they feel they are very vulnerable when they are taking a dump. His positioning when taking said dump, is that of a squat-like, subdued position. Not the most ideal if he needs to suddenly take off or defend himself against another animal. Its basically just instinct that makes him so aware.

So then, whats up with the staring at you? It turns out since they are vulnerable, they want you to watch their back. So they are looking at you, in case you give them a heads up that something is coming their way. If you were to suddenly move to one direction your dog will no doubt respond.

Some dogs even cease any dumping whatsoever, if you are looking at them or if they are on a leash. They feel helpless and may want to do their biz away from you as not to draw attention to the situation.

So its basically just a natural, instinctive thing for your dog to look at you or bail a distance when taking a number 2. As long as they are safe, allow them to do their business at a distance or where they prefer. Try to respect them and not interfere with their awkward time of day when its bombs away and they feel a bit vulnerable.
