When it comes to pampering our dogs, nothing is too good. Whether that means treating them to doggie day spas, tons of time at the park, or organic, gluten-free treats. But even the fanciest treats have at least one ingredient we can’t pronounce, which can be worrisome.
In order to avoid having to Google (or just accept not knowing), why not make your own tasty treats? This recipe is super easy to make — you whip it up with natural ingredients, bake it in your oven, and even you can taste test it. (Though that’d be a little weird.)
After trying these out and feeding them to my dog, I can unequivocally give these two paws up! Now, who’s ready for seconds?

We’re talking about animal cruelty and abandonment.
Fortunately, most people don’t have to see it firsthand, but when Jhonny Alquinta and his son were off-roading in Antofagasta, Chile, they witnessed something they couldn’t un-see…and definitely couldn’t ignore.

Diep told Bored Panda, “He was such a mess — super skinny, heavily matted, dirty.” But even after he was all cleaned up, nobody wanted to bring him home, so she and her husband adopted him and he settled in as a perfect new member of their family.
That’s when Diep started taking him out to restaurants. She writes, “He doesn’t lunge for food or really even care for it. He just likes to be out. He’ll get nibbles of anything that’s safe for him. I also carry a bag of treats for him in case there’s nothing he can have.” With a following that’s 108,000 people strong, you could say that Popeye is on his way to Instagram stardom.

It’s always a gift to have a soldier return home from war, but nowadays, about 20% of veterans returning from the Middle East struggle with PTSD, which is a different kind of battle entirely.
When Stephen Simmons came back from Iraq in 2008, he had trouble adjusting to life at home. His body had become so accustomed to the endorphins that were triggered by his high-stress occupation. To combat this, Simmons created his own “adventure therapy” program. He, his dog Puppi, and his cat Burma hike Oregon’s mountains to help the vet get back on track.

Every person who’s ever had a dog knows that their pooch loves them unconditionally, but when Eric rescued Peety, the pup taught his owner how to love himself as well.
Eric weighed over 300 pounds, had type 2 diabetes, and was told by his doctor that if things didn’t change, he only had a few more years to live. But when he met Peety, who, like himself was obese and middle-aged, they began the long process of bettering themselves.
Eric & Peety (from Humane Society Silicon Valley)Eric weighed over 300 pounds, had type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and his doctor told him he would be dead in 5 years unless he changed. They suggested a dog. Eric went to the Humane Society Silicon Valley and said he wanted an obese, middle-aged dog, so they would have something in common. What happened next transformed their lives.

Stray dogs raised on the streets or in the wild quickly learn how to fend for themselves. That often means digging through trash to find even the tiniest scraps of food, and burrowing into piles of garbage for shelter. That desperation to survive can sometimes lead to tragedy.
The good people at Animal Aid Unlimited got a call about a wild dog living next to a trash-filled river that had been spotted with its head stuck in a plastic jar. It took a bit of searching, but eventually, they found the pup walking in the woods. The poor thing was barely able to breathe.
Watching the dog run free at the end put the biggest smile on my face! Due to the extreme number of stray dogs, Animal Aid Unlimited can only bring animals in the most desperate need of help back to their center, which is why they had to let this pup go after rescuing it.
If you’d like to support them, please visit their site and donate! They do truly wonderful work.

From sniffing out cancer to alerting their owners of impending epileptic seizures, these critters are amazing when it comes to detecting potentially dangerous situations. But how far do those abilities reach? Some people think one pooch proves that they extend way beyond what any of us thought possible.
When a driver in Saransk, Russia, was faced with a dog that refused to get out of their way, they likely didn’t think about what it may have been trying to communicate. Studies show that cats are living longer lives than ever before, mostly thanks to improved medical care. Now it looks like dogs are getting their own life-extending research, with a remarkable new studyrevealing that a single drug could prevent millions of canine companions around the world from suffering from potentially fatal heart difficulties.
Led by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) at the University of London, the seven-year-long study found that the drug pimobendan delays the onset of heart failure linked to mitral valve disease (MVD) in dogs for an average of 15 months.
MVD occurs when one or multiple heart valves become damaged or infected, and the flow of blood to and from the heart is impeded. It happens to be the most common form of heart disease for these particular pets, especially small dogs like toy poodles and dachshunds. Elderly people can suffer from MVD too.
Most dogs with heart complications die within two years of their onset. By raising awareness of this drugs ability to counteract the condition, the researchers hope that people withpet dogs prone to suffering from it will get more than an extra year of companionship from them.
It must be noted, however, that a dog must still receive ultrasound and X-ray scans before a veterinarian can officially determine whether or not they have MVD. Only then can it be established if they should be given pimobendan.
The EPIC study, in short. RoyalVetsLondon via YouTube
The vast majority of dogs with this heart disease will show no signs of the problem for quite some time, although they may have a heart murmur, lead researcher Adrian Boswood, a professor of veterinary cardiology at the RVC, said in a statement emailed to IFLScience.
This makes it crucial that all owners get their dog’s heart checked regularly by their vet, Boswood added, noting that this is especially true for small breed dogs over the age of 7 years old, as this is when the risk increases.
Remarkably, cavalier King Charles spaniels are around 20 times more prone to MVD. They can be affected much earlier in life, from around 5 years old, and the team recommend that they are sent for check-ups far more regularly.
Around one in every 25 dogs show signs of heart disease. In the UK alone, over 250,000 dogs likely suffer from MVD. Extend that prevalence up to a global scale, and thats a heck of a lot of pet dogs afflicted by the condition.
Sadly, few realize the extent of the problem, or that it even exists. A recent survey revealed that 53 percent of people that owned small dogs did not think that their pet was at risk of developing heart disease, despite the fact that MVD is most common in these breeds.
The statistics suggest that a lot of pet dogs are dying far too early. Pimobendan has the potential to significantly extend their lives.
This game-changing research, which was published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, involved 360 dogs from 11 different countries. Dubbed EPIC (Evaluating Pimobendan in Cardiomegaly), this study is unprecedented in its high standards of clinical research, featuring the type normally seen in human medical trials.
In fact, this study was terminated early: The interim analysis results were so conclusive that no more research was deemed necessary. Rather wonderfully, the team also decided that it was unethical to continue to withhold the life-saving treatment from dogs within the placebo group, those receiving fake treatment.
Already, then, the drug has begun to work its magic. Ultimately, if its use becomes more widespread, the world should expect to see far more happily wagging tails in the near future.
What a poser. Best dog photo/Shutterstock

As if dogs didn’t do enough just by existing and being awesome, these stalwart companions have also achieved a tremendous amount of respect in some of the toughest jobs on the planet. Whether it’s braving the icy arctic, or seeking out epicurean delights, many working breeds have been plying their trades for centuries, if not millennia.
Part of this success in the working world has been from selective breeding. Humans, needing the help of their canine cohorts, began to enhance the already stellar traits of dogs into different breeds. From beefy breeds with thick coats, meant to survive in the harshest conditions, to dogs with senses of smell or sight or hearing that far exceed other breeds, there seems to be a dog for every job.
As you’ll soon see, we mean every job. Ever consider hiring a dog to be a babysitter? It might seem crazy, but get a load of this list and you might be surprised by some of the roles dogs have filled through the years. Some are no longer jobs for which we feel dogs are qualified. Others, they’ve only gotten better at.
Huskies, Malamutes, Samoyeds, and more have all been tasked at one point or another with dragging heavily-laden sleds through ice and snow. Whether in Alaska, Russia, or anywhere in between (the long way, that is), sled dogs have provided vital transportation for humans and gear to some of the most inhospitable places in the world.
We often think of Lhasa Apsos as lap dogs, these days, but would you believe these silky-haired cuties were bred as an alarm system for Tibetan Buddhist temples? It’s true! This is why the breed is fiercely loyal to its family but also tends to be highly suspicious of strangers, as anyone who’s ever paid a visit to a Lhasa Apso owner’s house can tell you.
Pit bulls (yes, pit bulls!) were often left in charge of babies in Victorian England. The breed was regarded then (as now) as a loyal, protective one, able to be incredibly loving and affectionate but certainly not one to cross.
Well, it’s not really a career, but it’s certainly widely assumed to be one thanks to one enterprising 17-year-old painter. Edwin Landseer portrayed two rescue dogs “reviving” a traveler with a barrel of brandy carried on the collar. St. Bernards did, in fact participate in mountain rescues, but the St. Bernard Hospice that originated the breed used them much as any other dog, to sniff out lost travelers in the snow, so they could be rescued by plain old humans. The cartoons lied!
Shepherding breeds like collies are not only highly intelligent, they’re also incredibly athletic, having been bred to guide sheep and other farm animals into or out of pens. But these clever dogs do more than that. They’re also fierce protector of their flocks from predators.
German shepherds and also increasingly the related Belgian Malinois breeds are highly prized by police officers around the globe for their keen senses which can detect bombs and drugs. They are often also the first member of the team into a room when there might be danger. They work in the military as well, and it should be no surprise that dogs are always the most decorated non-human members of any military throughout history. The only other animal that even comes close is the horse, which hasn’t been as practical for military endeavors lately, but still finds employment in many police departments.
Newfoundlands were bred as companions to fishermen in – where else? – Newfoundland, pulling nets, hauling gear, and so forth. They’ve since been put to work as water rescue dogs, as their thick, triple coats are essentially waterproof, while their sturdy frames and webbed feet make them incredible swimmers.
Estacada Festival of the Fungus
In France and Europe, certain breeds of hound are prized for their ability to seek out the dirty little balls of fungal gold that fine diners know as truffles. Pigs are also used for this task, but it’s much easier and more effective to use truffle hounds, who are easily trained to find the valuable delicacy beneath the soil but – and here’s the important part – not eat them. Pigs easily find them without any training, but they do so because they are looking for a meal.

Over 7.6 million animals are surrendered to animal shelters in America each year. It’s a startling statistic to come to terms with, and many don’t understand how dire the situation is for these animals. Many of them are the victims of abuse, but many more are given up by their owners when they are no longer wanted. Sadly, only a small minority eventually go on to find forever homes. This is why it’s so strongly encouraged that everyone looking to add a pet to their family considers adopting rather than buying from a pet store.
The Marin Humane Society in Novato, California recently received two dogs that were extremely frightened of everyone they came into contact with. It was only after some examination that they discovered that the female, thought to be a Chihuahua mix, had recently given birth and was cowering due to being separated from her pups. Refusing to move away from the corner of her room, workers feared for the mental well-being of this mother, and the safety of her pups.
Knowing that the puppies were too young to be separated from their mom, employees managed to track down the previous owner and convince them to surrender the puppies as well. Once they are old enough, the Marin Humane Society plans to find a caring home for each of these puppies and their parents. In the meantime, just look at the reaction of this frightened mother when she is reunited with her puppies.

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Anyone that’s ever spent any time with an old dog can tell you that’s simply just not true. On the other hand, even if it were true, who cares? That old dog has earned his golden retirement, free of obedience training exercises through years of lavishing you with unconditional love and loyalty.
If there’s anything that truly shows just why people love dogs, it’s watching an old dog. Whether their joints are achy, or they’ve gone blind, or whatever other ailments they might be feeling, when they get going, they are 100% dog. Dogs don’t ever stop being dogs and that’s what makes them so wonderful. They never give up.
Soldiers are known for their tenacity as well, so maybe it’s even more appropriate to see the reunion in this video. Buddy is a 13-year-old golden retriever, and he’s lost almost all his hearing. His legs don’t work so great anymore and he really can’t get up on all fours, but when his best friend in the whole world comes back from months away at boot camp, this senior dog turns into a loveable, energetic puppy all over again. When you see that leg kicking, your heart will simply melt. He may be old, but he’s still a dog.

It’s a well-known fact that dogs are man’s best friend. Their loyalty, playfulness, and fun-loving attitudes are the reason millions of people around the world adopt them into their homes every year. Their unique ability to learn a variety of neat tricks, whether it’s rejecting kisses, or barking softly on command, also makes them an excellent choice for relieving everyday stress. Even if you’re not a dog person, it’s hard not to appreciate how amazing they are.
While most dogs end up in homes, where they never have to worry about food or shelter, there are just as many that must endure a hard life on the streets or in the hands of an abusive owner. These dogs usually end up at adoption centers designed to improve their chances of being adopted into a better home. One such dog goes by the name of Peety. He was found alone in a backyard and sent to an adoption center where he was adopted by Eric — a middle-aged man who was on the verge of losing his life to obesity.
Eric saw a lot of similarities between himself and Peety. They were both overweight, middle-aged, and dealing with a sense of not belonging because of their condition. Their similarities drew them closer together with each passing day until they were inseparable. Peety’s can-do attitude inspired Eric to go on regular jogs, which eventually led to him losing all his excess weight and regaining full control of his health. In the end, Peety saved Eric’s life.

Life is hard for a stray, abandoned animal. They don’t know when or where their next meal will be, and they’re in constant danger of being seriously injured or killed by other animals (or traffic). They also have no access to medical care and no protection from diseases or pests. Hope For Paws, an animal rescue organization from Los Angeles, California, has dedicated itself to the rescue and rehabilitation of such animals.
Recently, they found Benji the dog, who had been homeless his whole life. At first, Benji is incredibly nervous, yelping and running away from his rescuers. Once they were able to get him secured, they saw the work they had cut out for them – his fur was badly matted, overgrown, and heavily infested with ticks and lice. Once they groomed him, they found that underneath all that fur was a scared (but handsome) dog. It took Benji nearly five months to get fully used to the presence of humans and other dogs, but today he’s happy, healthy, and waiting to be adopted.
According to recent numbers from the ASPCA, there are five homeless animals for every one homeless person in the United States. There’s no way to estimate how many stray dogs and cats there really are nationwide, but estimates for cats alone go as high as 70 million. Only a fraction of those end up in shelters (approximately 7 million former pets and 14 million strays per year). Getting into a shelter isn’t much better – nearly 2.7 million animals are euthanized each year due to a lack of adoptive homes. That’s why we encourage everyone to find a rescue organization in their area and adopt their next pet instead of going to the pet store.
