Before last weekend, Cheryl Wassus had no idea what a furry was. (If you’re in that camp, know it’s a group of people who go to conventions dressed up in furry costumes.)
So when shelearned that the Motor City Furry Convention was coming to town, and that it was raising money for Pets for Vets (a charity that pairs dogs with veterans), she assumed it was a pet-themed event and decided to bring her one-year-old therapy dog Link to this “animal” event.
She was kind of right, but they weren’t exactly the kind of animals she was expecting…
Her son, Kenny, shared the pictures on Twitter where they quickly went viral because it’s adorable.
“This is just a whole subculture I wasnt even aware existed,” Cheryl said.
“When we set up tables and do promos and educate the public and do outreach, I had no idea the outreach was going to be other human furry people,” she continued. “I guess youre never too old to learn.”
She said it was a little embarrassing at first because Link was just a little curious why people were wearing tails, so he was doing some serious tail-sniffing and checking out people.
“They werent offended, though, they just embraced him,” she said. “It was all good. Just a real interested community.”
In the end, Cheryl and Link even participated in a panel at the con, which raised $10,000 for Pets for Vets.
