The World’s Rarest Wild Dog Has Not Gone Extinct After All

After decades of doubt, researchers haverediscovered “the worlds rarest wild dog”the New Guinea highland wild dog (HWD). Who’s a good boy?

The discovery came about through recent expeditions by the University of Papua in the mountains of New Guinea. Building on 30years of work by Dr I Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia, they traced the tracks and scat of the wild dogs to make predictions on their whereabouts. They then used hidden dens, scent lures, and camera traps to get photographic documentation. Through DNA sequencing carried out on theirpoop and other biological samples, the New Guinea Highland Wild Dog Foundation say they have confirmed that they still “exist and thrive in the highlands of New Guinea.”

Overall, they have gathered hundreds of images of HWDs in the wild, including at least 15 individuals ofmales, females, and pups. The photographs were taken up to 4,600 meters (15,000 feet) above sea level, along Puncak Jaya on New Guineas remote central mountain spine. This makes it the largest and only apex predator on the whole of New Guinea island.

There are over 200 of these pooches in captivity, but there was a lack of evidence to say they were still around in their native wild. Other potentially credible observations andphotographs have popped up over the years, however many believe that it was simply another subspecies, the New Guinea Singing Dog (NGSD), or agenetically “watered down” version ofother strays or village dogs.

This is where the waters get a bit muddy. Theres debate among the scientific community as to whether the HWD is genetically different enough to separate them from the NGSD or even an Australian dingo.

Two pups explore scent lures. New Guinea Highland Wild Dog Foundation

To try and clear up the confusion, the scientists on the project hope to further analyze the HWDs DNA. The team notedtheres a full scientific publication on its way, so stay tuned.

The New Guinea Highland Wild Dog Foundation saythis is a particularly fascinating pooch as thespecies couldbe a relic of the canid family (which includes domestic dogs, wolves, foxes, and jackals) from a time before human agriculture and domestication, therefore free from the selective breeding pressures of humans. However, this is also up for debate.

New Guinea Highland Wild Dog Foundation said in astatement: Further study is not only key to gauging the health and fitness of the ecosystem these dogs inhabit, but vital to understanding canid and human genetics, co-migration and co-evolution. To unlock the secrets of the Highland Wild Dog is to better understand ourselves and our own story.

If Their Dog Hadn’t Lured Them Down To The Water, Their Son Would’ve Died

In September 2015, two-year-old Alexander Kenney was playing at a dam near Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, Australia, when he fell into the water.

His nine-year-old dog, Leala, didn’t hesitate at all before jumping in to save him, but she couldn’t do it on her own. That’s when she ran to Alexander’s parents, David and Lisa, who took her behavior as a sign that something was very wrong. When they ran back to where their toddler was, they saw him lying face-down in the water.

They performed CPR on little Alexander for 27 minutes. When paramedics came, he was airlifted to a hospital and put into an induced coma for 36 hours. Doctors told them that it was very likely he’d have brain damage.

But when doctors brought him out of the coma, Alexander started breathing on his own and made a full recovery! They credited his dad’s CPR with saving his life, but didn’t forget the role Leala played in rescuing him.

“Without her we wouldn’t have our little boy with us today,” said Lisa. Watch her and David talk about the harrowing experience below.

How Dogs Could Make Children Better Readers

The Conversation

Issues around children learning to read are rarely out of the news. Which is hardly surprising becoming a successful reader is of paramount importance in improving a childs life chances. Nor is it surprising that reading creates a virtuous circle: the more you read the better you become. But what may come as a surprise is that reading to dogs is gaining popularity as a way of addressing concerns about childrens reading. The Conversation

There is a lot of research evidence indicating that children who read extensively have greater academic success. The UK Department for Educations Reading for Pleasure report, published in 2012, highlights this widely established link.

Keith Stanovich, an internationally eminent US literacy scholar (now based in Canada) wrote a widely-cited paper in 1986, describing this virtuous circle as the Matthew effect (a reference to the observations made by Jesus in the New Testament about the economic propensity for the rich to become richer and the poor, poorer). A downward spiral impacts upon reading ability and then, according to Stanovich, on cognitive capability.

Underachievement in groups of children in the UK is recognised in international studies and successive governments have sought to address the issues in a range of ways. Reading to dogs, so far, has not been among them, but its time to look at the strategy more seriously.

Bark and read.H.Hudson/The Kennel Club,Author provided

Many children naturally enjoy reading and need little encouragement, but if they are struggling their confidence can quickly diminish and with it their motivation. This sets in motion the destructive cycle whereby reading ability fails to improve.

So how can dogs help?

A therapeutic presence

Reading to dogs is just that encouraging children to read alongside a dog. The practice originated in the US in 1999 with the Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ) scheme and initiatives of this type now extend to a number of countries. In the UK, for example, the Bark and Read scheme supported by the Kennel Club is meeting with considerable enthusiasm.

image-20170316-10892-17pnba0.jpg

The ideal combination?Shutterstock

The presence of dogs has a calming effect on many people hence their use in Pets as Therapy schemes (PAT). Many primary schools are becoming increasingly pressurised environments and children (like adults) generally do not respond well to such pressure. A dog creates an environment that immediately feels more relaxed and welcoming. Reading can be a solitary activity, but can also be a pleasurable, shared social event. Children who are struggling to read benefit from the simple pleasure of reading to a loyal, loving listener.

Children who are struggling to read, for whatever reason, need to build confidence and rediscover a motivation for reading. A dog is a reassuring, uncritical audience who will not mind if mistakes are made. Children can read to the dog, uninterrupted; comments will not be made. Errors can be addressed in other contexts at other times. For more experienced or capable readers, they can experiment with intonation and voices, knowing that the dog will respond positively and building fluency further develops comprehension in readers.

For children who are struggling, reconnecting with the pleasure of reading is very important. As Marylyn Jager-Adams,a literacy scholar, noted in a seminal review of beginner reading in the US: If we want children to learn to read well, we must find a way to induce them to read lots.

Reading to a dog can create a helpful balance, supporting literacy activities which may seem less appealing to a child. Children with dyslexia, for example, need focused support to develop their understanding of the alphabetic code (how speech sounds correspond to spelling choices). But this needs to be balanced with activities which support independent reading and social enjoyment or the child can become demotivated.

Creating a virtuous circle

Breaking a negative cycle will inevitably lead to the creation of a virtuous circle and sharing a good book with a dog enables children to apply their reading skills in a positive and enjoyable way.

Research evidence in this area is rather limited, despite the growing popularity of the scheme. A 2016 systematic review of 48 studies Children Reading to Dogs: A Systematic Review of the Literature by Hall, Gee and Mills demonstrated some evidence for improvement in reading, but the evidence was not strong. There clearly is more work to do, but interest in reading to dogs appears to have grown through the evidence of case studies.

The example, often cited in the media, is that of Tony Nevett and his greyhound Danny. Tony and Dannys involvement in a number of schools has been transformative, not only in terms of reading but also in promoting general well-being and positive behaviour among children with a diverse range of needs.

So, reading to dogs could offer many benefits. As with any approach or intervention, it is not a panacea but set within a language-rich literacy environment, there appears to be little to lose and much to gain.

She Was Heartbroken When She Thought Her Dog Died — Then This Hero Stepped In

On March 21, 35-year-old Crystal Lamirande came home to see that her Santa Monica apartment was engulfed in flames.

She was terrified because her 10-year-old dog named Nalu was still trapped inside but she couldn’t get past the smoke to rescue him. That’s when Andrew Klein, a firefighter for the Santa Monica Fire Department, found the unconscious pup that wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse.

“I discovered him amidst all the smoke and the heat. I grabbed him and as soon as I grabbed him I knew that he was unresponsive just by his dead weight,” he said.

Klein didn’t waste any time performing CPR on Nalu, including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

After spending 20 minutes working on him while Lamirande watched, Klein brought Nalu back to life. What’s even better is that nobody else was hurt and the other firefighters were able to put out in the flames in 10 minutes.

This Tortoise May Not Be A Dog, But He Sure Thinks He Is — LOL

If you ever met Bubba the tortoise, you might notice something interesting about the little guy.

Besides being an adorable nugget, Bubba seems to be mistaken about what kind of animal he really is. To you or me, it’s obvious that he’s carrying a shell, but he’s pretty convinced that he’s of the canine variety. There’s really no point in trying to convince him otherwise, though, because he’s much more interested in chasing around his ball than listening to your nonsense.

Check out the little dog-tortoise hybrid for yourself and just try not to giggle at his antics.

Bubba may not actually be a dog, but he sure has the whole ball obsession down! Be sure to share this energetic cutie with all your animal-loving friends!

This Dog Showed Its Tiny Human Exactly What To Do When Confronted By A Shadow

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: dogs are pretty much the best.

Sure, their curiosity can definitely get them into trouble on a regular basis, but the way they react to the world around them can also be just about the funniest thing you’ve ever seen — and this baby wholeheartedly agrees. Her dog became absolutely fascinated by her shadow while she was bouncing in her swing and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pounce on whatever that dark, threatening floor creature was.

While the dog’s antics are pretty hilarious already, this cutie’s laughter makes them even better.

She Saw A Scared Dog Sitting Alone. The Sign She Found Next To Him Broke Her Heart

“Free pup. Name is Scooter. Owner went to jail today.”

That’s the heartbreaking sign Maria Jaramillo saw next to a tiny abandoned dog in Lexington County, South Carolina. Being an animal lover, she was crushed when she saw people walk right by the pup without so much as a second glance. She and her cousin Bianca Anahi Cushman decided to find a no-kill shelter for Scooter so that he could find a forever home.

With his leash tied to a tree, the poor dog just sat there waiting for help. He was left with access to food and water, but the food was found scattered on the ground near him. He was probably too stressed to eat.

Thanks to the determination and kindness of Jaramillo and Cushman, Scooter is now safe and sound in the home of Paula Langford, who is the founder of Southeastern Homeless Animals. As of this writing, rescuers are looking to place Scooter in a home. It is believed that police arrested the dog’s owner at a local Walmart before he was found. You can find more information in the video below.

If you’d like to learn more about what happens to dogs when their owners go to jail, check out this piece on Vice. Share this saddening story with all the animal lovers in your life. We wish Scooter nothing but love and happiness from here on out!

This Dog And Boy Have Something Amazing In Common — Now They’re Best Friends!

Rowdy the black Labrador lived most of his life as a normal dog with his family in Oregon, but when he turned 12, something strange started happening to his face.

The fur around his eyes began turning white in small patches, and within a year, they had developed into full circles. Nobody could figure out what was causing them until a veterinarian suggested it could be vitiligo, a long-term condition that causes patches of skin to lose their pigment and become white. A biopsy confirmed that he did have it — and now he’s raising awareness through the American Vitiligo Research Foundation and helping children with the condition to embrace their unique appearances.

For the past year, Rowdy has been inspiring Carter, an eight-year-old boy from Arkansas with vitiligo, to love his skin. Carter’s mom saw that he was struggling to accept his condition before — then she found photos of Rowdy online.

“I read that Rowdy had vitiligo and I was blown away, and when I showed Carter he was so excited to see a dog that was famous for his vitiligo,” Adcock said.

They’ve been keeping in touch with Rowdy’s owner, Niki Umbenhower, ever since. Carter hoped to someday be able to meet Rowdy in person, and when an anonymous donor heard about them, they decided to help them meet by donating $5,000 for travel expenses.
